Government makes the fight against corruption a national agenda (16/8/2012) Today at 09hr15 at the Meeting Room 302, the Government House, PM’s Office Minister Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisan made a public statement on corruption saying the government has turned the issue into national agenda. The government is currently collaborating with 76 provincial departments and other 144 agencies to come up with 220 corruption projects to be commenced nationwide this year. The agenda was erected with an effort to observe each of the departments’ mission and working process while examining causes which could potentially lead to corruption. An overhaul may prove necessary for some existing administrative systems to assure the best practices. Alternatively, new regulations and laws, as well as new technological equipment, may be introduced for the aforementioned reason.

Each project will span for 1 year with shorter periods for some short-term projects. Committee members and experts will in addition take part in the process and a series of evaluations will be conducted in every quarter. If a system was improved and human labour was reduced, the problems of corruption could effectively be deterred. By way of example, in the past there was an introduction of new machineries in the Customs system, there work was made more speedy and efficient and corruption problems diminished.
Recently, “Operations against corruption” units were establised in all the government mininstries. The units are to take charge of overseeing and processing complaints and other issues pertaining to corruption with support from the public and private secter, as well as members of media and general public. As of now, a total of 128 proposals in addition to 71 provicial proposals have been presented and approved. The remaining 21 projects from 5 provinces and 16 other departments needed further revision.
In this connection, the Prime Minister will this Saturday preside over a session to further deliberate relevant guidelines for this national plan. The gathering will take place at the façade of Central World Shopping Centre (Zone B) and an opening of a ‘complaint box’ will be incorporated as a symbolic gesture towards the project, alongside a public signing for anti-fraud and corruption, among other activities. On this occasion, the public, members of media and concerned agencies, alike, are welcome to join the activity which will take place during 18-19 August 2012. |
