Prime Minister Urged Concerned Agencies to Find Cause for Sinking Ground and Secure People Living near the River Bank (5/7/2012)

Today (5 July 2012) at 10.50 hrs., Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had an interview after having chaired the Water and Flood Management Committee (WFMC) weekly meeting at the Water and Flood Management and Policy Office, Red Building, the Government House that the meeting discussed about the government’s disaster warnings data. Currently, forecasting and warning data for people available at many Ministries and at various agencies is the source of  information which will be sent as fact. Then the fact will be verified with the area  and information will be analyzed for dissemination to public through website and media with unity.

The Prime Minister said that complete disaster warning meant having automatic early warning, but some areas did not have that. Budget was urgently allocated for the area with stagnant flood. The Ministry of Interior’s mechanism in connecting with the district and provincial agencies for disseminating information through SMS network or media was under development to be more automatic in order to facilitate more information to the public.

The National Water and Flood Management and Policy Office would take care of information on website “thaiwater.net” being integrated and verified with information of the Ministry in order to disseminate to the public such as how many beds available at a hospital. This kind of information was under integration and development in many aspects and its concerned agencies were assigned to do in details and report back every week.

People responsible for giving information were classified in many levels. Officials giving information in the area were Sub-District Heads, District Heads, District Chiefs at the local level and province would be responsible for the verification. Public could inform through website because there was confusion in the past. The concerned agencies would screen and verify information receiving from the public and  government before handling down to responsible unit to survey and take action.

The Prime Minister confirmed that although the situation was getting better, we should be cautious. The problem of sinking ground near the river bank in Angthong province was assigned to the Department of Mineral Resources for urgent examination. At this stage, damaged houses were declared as disaster area and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the Ministry of Interior were in the area and already evacuated people. The officials were assigned to examine the cause for sinking ground and urgently collect the data, including secure people living near the river bank.
