Prime Minister Satisfied with the Water Management Efforts, Management Project Will Be Finished before the Rainy Season (3/7/2012)
Today (3 July 2012) at 12.20 hrs., in front of the Secretariat of the Cabinet Office, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra had an interview with the media after the Cabinet meeting on the meeting with related agencies concerning the government’s water management. The Prime Minister said that it was the direct follow-up report from every related agency before the rainy season which the Water and Flood Management Committee (WFMC) and related agencies always followed the result, for giving the assurance, it was required to consult and talk in details about the water management. Some management process in the water source area was behind the schedule and would be finished late than this June. The action plan would be adjusted and urged to finish within the time frame.

The Prime Minister said that she was satisfied with the water management such as dam and water management, digging up and removing mud from canals, although it has not been completed yet, it was believed, with the progress, to be finished before the rainy season and drainage the rainfall. One of her concern is the construction issue which would take time according to the regulations of the Prime Minister Office on purchasing and procurement. However, the action plan in terms of construction would be adjusted. It was urged to process in the important area first and the rest would be talked with the WFMC and related agencies in working in as emergency situation. For the flood in provincial area, disaster prevention and mitigation office of each province would be responsible for management.

The Prime Minister said further that for the area near the Chao Phraya River’s bank in Angthong province which was flooded with land subsidence, the Angthong Governor was ordered to survey the area and follow-up the assistance and report the result thoroughly. At this stage, no report had been given yet from the Angthong Governor. The media would be informed once the report had been received.

Miss Sansanee Nakphong, Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson, had a press release on the cabinet meeting, gist as follows. The Prime Minister urged the cabinet meeting to supervise the water problems and ordered the responsible Minister of each area to follow up and closely supervise all level to make the water management run smoothly.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister emphasized the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to connect the warning system with the Water and Flood Management Committee (WFMC) and requested the concerned persons to meet and consult with the WFMC today at 17.00 hrs. The Prime Minister would continuously follow up the meeting result on water management every week. The Prime Minister also emphasized the Ministry of Transportation on flood prevention and assigned the Minister of Transportation to supervise various constructions to be strong and safe and have all assignment completed within the time frame.

Besides, the Prime Minister had an interview with the media after the cabinet meeting about the discussion with the Commanders-in-Chief  yesterday that it was an usual meeting according to the schedule and she had a luncheon with them, including the exchange point of view on work which the army had fully given cooperation to the government according to the mission. For the impact on the case that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) cancelled the weather condition survey project in South East Asia, the army did not have any report. It was an academic cooperation on science. The relationship between the Royal Thai Army and the United States of America Army remained as usual, did not have any problem. Lastly, the Royal Thai Army visited the United States of America Army, and the Commander-in-Chief of the United States of America also had a visit to Thailand.  The government and the army had already maintained the relationship between the two countries.

The Prime Minister further said about the trip to join the United Nations General Assembly in September in the United States of America that she had to see her schedule first. If there is not any urgent mission during that time, she will participate in that meeting in order to build good relationship and meet with leaders from various countries.
